PENTASTIC JAZZ FESTIVAL ON THE S.S SICAMOUS

The Penticton Jazz Festival

From Friday, September 9th to Sunday September 11th 2017

The Jazz festival is an annual event, held the weekend following Labour Day. For three days Penticton BC hosts World Class HOT Jazz, with musicians from all over Canada and the USA. This years Festival is shaping up to be the best one yet. The event is spread out over five venues in Penticton. Each is filled with an array of world class band.

The SS Sicamous Speakeasy

The ship will be filled with a vintage a “speakeasy” atmosphere. The performance schedule for the S.S. Sicamous (Speakeasy) is listed down below. Information about each of the musicians is also included. You will need a wrist band to attend, these need to be purchased in advance. They are available from the SOEC (South Okanagan Event Centre) and cannot be purchased on the door. The doors to the SS Sicamous will be open 30 minutes before each performance is due to start.

About the Musicians:

Blackstick – Dixieland, early jazz styles, ragtime and old-time gospel music. Blackstick is the union of a grandfather-grandson team of clarinet players. Both possessing charismatic vocal talents, Evan and Lloyd Arntzen will be accompanied by some of Vancouver’s most swingin’ musicians. This powerhouse jazz band is not to be missed!

Black Swan – Dixieland, early jazz styles, ragtime and old-time gospel music Black Swan is a fun, artistic group that specializes in Dixieland, early jazz styles, ragtime and old-time gospel. The band loves the hot jazz music of the 1920s and features the sizzling talents of vocalist Marilyn Keller.

Cornet Chop Suey – The Cornet Chop Suey Jazz Band has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity since its arrival on the jazz scene in 2001. Best known for a wide variety of styles, Cornet Chop Suey applies its own exciting style to traditional jazz, swing, blues and “big production” numbers.

Curbside Trad Jazz Band – The Curbside Trad Jazz Band consists of members ranging in ages from 16-22, and is based out of beautiful Chilliwack, BC. They look forward to playing some hot 20s Jazz and Blues just for you!

Draga`s Dragons – Returning is Bob Draga’s soaring melodies, inspired improvisations and rich tones. In performance, he and ‘his friends’ cover music, ranging from ragtime to stride, ballads to bounces, and a surprise or two thrown in! Experience the delightful work and simpatico of a trio featuring gifted, emotional players with a touch of stand up comedy?)

Dock Side Drive – Dock Side Drive is one of the West Coast`s newest swing & show bands. This dynamic band will entertain audiences with the music of the 1940s, 50s & 60s. They offer a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes that will usher you through more than three decades of song, including the music of Ray Charles, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and other favourites.

Gonzalo Bergera Quartet – The all-acoustic Gonzalo Bergara Quartet plays a modern variant of 1930s Django Reinhardt-inspired gypsy jazz. Composer and lead guitarist Gonzalo Bergara mixes a cascade of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina.

Tom Rigney & Flambeau – Flambeau specializes in fiery Cajun and Zydeco two-steps, low-down blues, funky New Orleans grooves, and heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and waltzes.

Wildcat – Comprised of six of the finest musicians in Arizona, offers traditional New Orleans and Chicago jazz, performed in a spirit and style that is true to its musical roots and wildly popular with audiences around the southwest United States. Their energetic performances are sizzling with musical energy and steeped in good humor.

Wally`s Warehouse Waifs – You have been enjoying these individual musicians for years. With their varied backgrounds and experience, they bring a level of entertainment to the stage unseen in most bands. Each are masters of their instrument(s) and excel in the art of improvisation and creativity; their repertoire is limitless
