KVR -The Model Railway
The KVR Model Railway Club held its first meeting 0n March 20th 1988. It is dedicated to capturing the spirit and atmosphere of the KVR. We have chosen the late 1950's as our time frame in order to allow us more variety of motive power and operations.
The 15 meter x 4 meter layout is constructed in HO Scale (1:87), aboard the cargo deck of the S.S. Sicamous, now landlocked on the shores of Okanagan Lake in Penticton B.C.
Steam was giving way to the diesel era and we try to depict both modes of travel. Our engines pull "consists" of mostly CPR rolling stock, loaded with produce, grains, gravel and logs harvested from the valley. Passengers wait for the train as it pulls into Brookmere station, and Penticton station. Yards show the maintenance of locomotives and rolling stock as it took place in Penticton, and freight trains are made up on its sidings.
A number of the buildings were scratch built by members of the club along with the trestles, bridges and boats. Some of the trees are also scratch built, with volunteers investing thousands of hours to complete the intricate work and make the presentation fun to investigate.
There is approximately 165 metres of track and members have put in several hundreds of hours in the construction and maintenance of the tracks. During the winter months the members select a section of the layout that needs refurbishing, and bring it back to a "Like New" status.
