
Volunteering at the SS Sicamous, Penticton
The SS Sicamous Society is a non-profit organization that works to protect the marine heritage of the Okanagan. We do this through the support of our community and volunteers. Our volunteers are a diverse and talented group who enjoy sharing knowledge and learning with others.
We are currently looking for volunteers to fill the following roles:
- Volunteer Board Member
- Volunteer Handyman (or Handy-lady)
- Volunteer Font Desk Helper

Volunteer Board Member
Do you like to work collaboratively? Enjoy working on a team? Would you be interested in helping run the SS Sicamous Society, and determine our direction and effectiveness? As a member of the board you would lend your expertise to the projects at hand: working to develop projects and guide our non-profit organization into new opportunities for growth.
When would I start?
We have a vacancy on the board of directors, so you would be able to start right away.
What skills are you looking for?
We are especially looking for a volunteers with experience in business, marketing or education.
What is the time commitment?
We ask for a commitment of about 4 hours per month
How do I apply?
If you are interested in joining the board of directors please call us at 250-492-0403. We will arrange a time for you to come and meet the rest of the board. Volunteer Handyman (or Handy-Lady)
As a volunteer handy person you will be involved with restoration work and repairs all over the SS Sicamous, and the ships of the heritage park. You will be an integral part of the team, and we will put your valuable skills and experience to good use. Tasks can include assisting with woodworking, painting or electrical work, and you will be able to lend knowledge, skills and advice for the project at hand. You will also have the opportunity to do plenty of talking, as there are always lots questions from members of the public!
When do you need Volunteers?
We are looking for volunteers to help with the restorations year round. As a handy person you would be able to help from 10am-4pm Mondays to Fridays.
What is the time commitment?
We ask for a minimum of 3 hours per week. We are very flexible though, and will understand if you need some time off!
How do I join?
If you are interested in joining the crew please call the ship at 250-492-0403. We will set up an interview so we can see if we are a good fit for you, and to chat about type the activities that you would enjoy doing.
Volunteer Front Desk Helper
As a front desk helper you will provide information about the SS Sicamous, assist with tourism information requests, and general inquiries. You may also assist with office duties or provide guided tours for visitors. As a Front Desk Helper you will be the first point of contact for visitors, and so an important part of your role will be greeting people and making them feel welcome.
When do you need Front Desk Helpers?
We are looking for volunteers who are able to help Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-4pm, from April through to mid-October.
What is the time commitment?
We ask for a minimum of one 3 hour shift per week. We are very flexible though, and will understand if you need some time off!

The SS Sicamous Marine Heritage Society is a registered charity that is responsible for the SS Sicamous, and the other heritage vessels in our care. The SS Sicamous is celebrating 100 years this year, and would not be here today without the hard work and thousands upon thousands of volunteer hours that have been contributed over the years.
