The SS Sicamous is the largest Surviving Stern Wheeler in Canada. It is an iconic landmark located on the shoreline of Okanagan Lake in Penticton BC.

The SS Sicamous is a big ship with a small crew, so the work is varied, and flexibility is important.

We are looking to fill 3 different positions this summer…

*Historic Interpreter and Tour Guide

*Museum and Office Administration Assistant

*Facility Maintenance and Restoration Worker

Historic Interpreter and Tour Guide

Do you have an interest in History?

Do you love interacting with the public?

You are gonna love this job!

You will be responsible for many different activities including: greeting visitors at the front desk, leading tours on board the ship (extra points if you will don an historic costume), tracking attendance, research, merchandising and doing point of sales in our gift shop, assisting with event planning and program development and some light cleaning duties.

Your role as an Historic Interpreter will include….

•             Delivery of school programs and group tours

•             Assist with special event planning and preparation

•             Preparing educational materials for distribution to schools

•             Assisting with the development of hands on activities for use on tours and programming

•             Providing and assessing school program evaluations from the teachers at the time of tour

•             Interpreting the historic stories of the Ship and engaging with the public in historic costume

•             Assist with Special Event Set up and take down

•             Able to interact with the public in a friendly and informative manner

•             Record and document activities for future reference

•             Facebook and Social Media research and posting (under supervision of management)

•             Comfortable handling cash and POS payments

•             Ensure paperwork is in order and finalize reporting documents

•             Front Desk and Gift Shop Sales and Information as needed

•             Opening and Closing of Museum and Gift Shop

•             General cleaning duties

Wage: $16/hour

Hours: 37.5 hours per week.

Dates of Employment: Mid May to August 31, 2020 

This full time position is available for a full-time student between the ages of 16 and 30

This position may be funded through Young Canada Works  or Canada Summer Jobs

Research, Marketing and Office Administrative Assistant

Do you have an interest in History?

Do you enjoy organizing and working behind the scenes?

Your are gonna love working here!

You will be responsible for many different activities including: researching historical events, tracking attendance and visitor interaction, data entry, responding to and directing calls and emails, creating social media posts and newsletters, helping with archival management, greeting visitors at the front desk, cleaning duties, assisting with event planning and program development.

Job Requirements: The ideal candidate possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an outstanding work ethic as well as: 

Assisting Office Staff with ongoing admin duties under direction and supervision of the Museum Administrator and Office Management

  • Updating of Membership, Donor and Volunteer Database
  • Answering general email and phone messages
  • Forwarding important messages and documents to intended recipients
  • Tracking attendees and event statistics
  • Member Newsletter creation and distribution
  • Research and documenting articles
  • Digitizing archival information
  • Follow up on inquiries and information requests
  • Able to interact with the public in a friendly and informative manner
  • Assist in delivery of school programs and tours as needed

Facility Maintenance and Restoration Worker

Do you have an interest in History?

Are you a “fix it” kinda person?

You are gonna love this job!

The SS Sicamous is a big ship with a small crew, so the work is varied, and flexibility is important. Working under the supervision of our experienced crew, you will be responsible for taking on the primary upkeep and general maintenance on board the Ship and in the Heritage Park. You will be helping to keep the Ship in tip top shape for our busy Tourist season. You may also be helping out with many different activities including: greeting visitors at the front desk, assisting with event set up and take down and other shared duties.

This position works under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Foreman and Office Management

  • Ensure that the Ship is clean and ready for the day’s events (enlisting the help of other staff and volunteers if needed)
  • Take care of small day to day custodial and maintenance issues
  • Work with Sicamous Restoration Team on jobs as needed
  • Able to work independently on assigned projects (ie: cleaning and painting projects)
  • Assist with the maintenance and running of the Model Railway during open hours
  • Document and Report any safety or maintenance needs to the Supervisor
  • Ensure that all safety and security requirements are handled and addressed
  • Assist with Special Event Set up and take down when requested
  • Able to interact with the public in a friendly and informative manner
  • Comfortable handling cash and POS payments
  • Ensure paperwork is in order and finalize reporting documents
  • Front Desk and Gift Shop Sales and Information as needed
  • Opening and Closing of Museum and Gift Shop

There is always lots to do, and we are happy to provide training.

Wage: $16/hour
